NIBE-FUTO Linkage Programme in Biomedical Technology
Admission Requirements
Admission to the B.Tech in Biomedical Engineering Technology requires that the candidate has the following:
- Membership class of Graduate of NIBE or above, and
- Five NECO/GCE or WASC/GCE O/level credit passes in english language, mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics and
- A Diploma in Biomedical Technology or its equivalents from institutions recognized by the Council of NIBE, with at least a minimum of five years post-qualification cognate experience in relevant field; Candidates with a diploma shall join the 200L class of FUTO; or
- A Higher National Diploma in Biomedical Technology or its equivalents / First Degree in related sciences from institutions recognized by the Council of NIBE as well as be in a supervisory management level of practice; Candidates with a higher national diploma or first degree shall join the 300L class of FUTO.
Job Opportunities and Career Prospects
As the role of technology in biology, medical diagnostics, therapeutics and research continues to expand, the demand for skilled biomedical engineering professionals will continue to increase. This demand for the skilled professionals, ie. professionals with the working knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and engineering skills, required to design, manufacture and maintain the divers arrays of biomedical equipment and systems is currently overwhelming. Therefore, the career prospects for these professionals are great, both in the public and the private sector. These can be categorized into four areas:
- Clinical: Graduates of this programme can be gainfully employed in the clinical, hospital or health care setting as clinical/biomedical engineers and technologists to be responsible for managing “health-care technology†(equipment specification, purchase and maintenance, safety of biomedical equipment, education of non-technical staff and technical management).
- Research and Development: In Research and Development setting, graduates of the programme can be engaged in the various research institutes and centres and are involved in both fundamental/theoretical research and development (consultancy services and project management).
- Academia: This setting include the Universities, Poly- and Mono-technics, as well as Colleges of Education, Health Technology or Agriculture. Here, a measure of research and training is seen. The graduates of the programme can be involved in training budding professionals in the Dip, HND, B.Sc/B.Tech, M.Sc, PGD or Ph.D. They can also be engaged in the University Medical School or Teaching Hospital to train medical personnel in biomedical instrumentation.
- Industry: This is probably the widest area of prospect the world over (though in Nigeria the widest area of prospect is currently the clinical setting). In the industry setting, graduates of this programme can be engaged in the brewing and food technology industries as bioengineers, in the pharmaceutical and biochemical industries as biotechnologists, in the agriculture, environment and veterinary industries as pollution control managers and sanitary engineers; in the petroleum, sports or any other industry as occupational and safety engineers; and in the biomedical equipment manufacturing industries as biomedical engineers.
